What You’ll Do

Data Center Engineering, Strategic Engineering

  1. Provide technical support for strategic electrical engineering efforts
  2. Collaborate with data center technical & operations team in setting standards and improving data center efficiency and operations

Data Center Engineering, Design & Retrofit

  1. Provide technical design of electrical systems for retrofits
  2. Prepare electrical design criteria, conceptual design documents, and specifications for retrofits
  3. Prepare technical support for cost analysis and business cases for electrical retrofits & improvements
  4. Review electrical system test scripts, procedures, & results and participate in commissioning activities (as required)
  5. Travel to data center sites to oversee electrical retrofits & refreshes

Data Center Engineering, Technical Operations

  1. Assist in managing relationships with data center service providers, consultants, contractors, manufacturers and suppliers
  2. Drive technical operations innovation and efficiency within Uber’s data centers
  3. Collaborate with the on-site data center operation teams to improve workflow efficiency for data hall electrical systems
  4. Collaborate with internal teams to develop technical operations standards for electrical systems
  5. Review with partner teams to ensure continued service delivery during electrical data hall retrofits and preventive maintenances
  6. Review electrical operation configurations for compliance with SLAs
  7. Development and execution of electrical preventive maintenances
  8. Provide communication to internal and external teams about electrical system operation and limitations, as well as scheduled activities and maintenances
  9. Development and continuous improvement of MOPs, SOPs, Change Management requests, etc. for Uber procedures to external companies
  10. Participation with internal and external teams of potential data center electrical service impacts and high risk activity
  11. Respond as-needed during data center outages and incidents
  12. Collaborate and support partner teams to assist with power, cooling and network connectivity outages
  13. Participate in incident review meetings, root cause analysis investigations and discussions
  14. Travel to data center sites for system audits, engineering studies, and as-built updates

---- Basic Qualifications ----

General

  1. B.S. in electrical or architectural engineering degree
  2. Minimum 8 years of professional experience in data center design, construction and operations (PE is preferred)
  3. Travel to data center sites (25% to 50%)

Technical

Deep Domain Experience

  1. Power Distribution: Three-phase, conditioning, and distribution from utility to chip
  2. Understanding of mission critical power distribution, UPS, PDU and various data center electrical topologies
  3. Medium and low voltage design and distribution
  4. Understanding of electrical design and operational changes with varying rack power density
  5. Knowledge of industry standards, NEC, building codes, energy codes, and life safety fire alarm standards (e.g. NFPA)
  6. Fire protection (e.g. fire alarm) conceptual design, layout and distribution

Entry Level Domain Experience

  1. Cooling: Theory, methods and efficiency (PUE)
  2. Understanding and working knowledge of mechanical air-side and water-side systems for mission critical environments and various data center HVAC topologies
  3. Air-side design and distribution
  4. Wet-side design and distribution (chilled and condenser water systems)
  5. CRAC and CRAH design and distribution
  6. Understanding of mechanical design and operational changes with varying rack power density
  7. Knowledge of industry standards, ASHRAE, mechanical / building codes, energy codes, and life safety standards (e.g. NFPA)
  8. Networking & Structured Cabling Distribution: Basics of all layers plus cabling, optics and supporting infrastructure
  9. Understanding of mission critical structured cabling distribution to coincide with networking topology
  10. Understanding of various components within structured cabling designs
  11. Knowledge of industry standards, BICSI and RCDD standards
  12. DCIM: Monitoring protocols, data analysis and reporting
  13. Cross functional knowledge of mission critical systems, strong troubleshooting and analytical skills
  14. Exposure to load management within mission critical facilities
  15. Improve efficiency of data center technical systems (power, cooling, & structured cabling)

Non-Technical

  1. Collaborate and work with internal teams, Data Center Engineering & Operations staff, and carry out responsibilities with guidance from Senior Staff
  2. Strong communication, organization, and project management skills
  3. Excellent written and verbal communication skills with the ability to streamline the communication process for greater efficiency between teams
  4. Ability to self-serve, investigate, and execute with minimal instruction
  5. Strong crisis management, problem solving skills, and ability to work under pressure
  6. Ability to work flexible hours and be accessible 7x24

For San Francisco, CA-based roles: The base salary range for this role is USD$180,000 per year - USD$200,000 per year.

You will be eligible to participate in Uber's bonus program, and may be offered an equity award & other types of comp. All full-time employees are eligible to participate in a 401(k) plan.
