Our Grocery & Retail business is a startup within Uber, a team focussed on growth and innovation, but with the support and leverage of Uber’s large global ridesharing and delivery businesses. We own the delivery of everything that isn’t restaurant food - think groceries, essentials, alcohol, pharmaceuticals, beauty, and more... About the Role As a core member of the Grocery & Retail operations team, you will be responsible for driving marketplace reliability, courier supply health, and delivery cost efficiency across our Grocery & Retail vertical in Japan. Your role will span across courier supply management, courier quality management, and marketplace product operations—ensuring high fulfillment reliability, operational scalability, and sustainable growth. This role requires a combination of operational rigor, product thinking, and data-driven decision-making to shape the future of grocery delivery in Japan.
Your Impact in Role
- Drive sustainable growth of our Grocery & Retail business in Japan by ensuring strong courier supply and delivery reliability, including launch & expansion cities.
- Enhance marketplace efficiency by optimizing dispatch logic and product features in the Japan market.
- Create a better platform experience for consumers, merchants, and delivery partners alike by improving delivery partner service quality and experience.
Key Responsibilities
Marketplace Operations
- Build and maintain sufficient courier supply to ensure high reliability for Grocery & Retail merchants and consumers. Take ownership of key business metrics like delivery time per trip, on-time rate, delivery completion rate, and courier defect rate.
- Support geo-expansion for the Grocery & Retail business by securing and optimizing courier supply in new/remote cities.
- Work with our catalog operations team and merchants to improve utilization of 4-wheel / high capacity courier supply for heavy and bulky orders to drive efficiency and safety.
- Work with the sales team and merchant partners to mitigate supply-driven challenges for merchants, and improve efficiency, quality, and safety for our couriers.
Minimize courier defect rate through effective product education and quality management.
Build and maintain dashboards to monitor operational health and team OKRs.
Product operations
- Work in collaboration with our global product, ops, and engineering teams as the local product champion for dispatch products to improve delivery time, on-time rates, and courier supply hour utilization.
- Execute product rollouts in Japan, including localized educational materials for couriers and merchant partners.
- Promote marketplace driven growth by tailoring a portfolio of consumer-facing delivery options and demand shaping products to the Japan market.
The Experience You’ll Bring
- 5+ years of experience in operations, strategy, product ops, or marketplace roles.
- Proven ability to lead complex projects involving cross-functional teams.
- Strong analytical skills with experience in dashboarding, data interpretation, and metric target setting.
- Experience with SQL is required, experience with AI tools like Claude Code is a plus.
- Fluency in English is required, business fluency in Japanese is strongly preferred.
