Director, Head of AV Fleet Operations, APAC
Uber
About the Team
The AV Fleet Operations team is the bridge between Uber’s digital platform and the physical reality of autonomous movement. We don’t just manage software; we manage heavy assets, complex infrastructure, and the massive logistical puzzles required to make self-driving technology a daily reality for millions. Our team operates at the most ambitious frontier of Uber’s mobility strategy—navigating the "messy" intersection of cutting-edge tech and real-world constraints. We are a group of tenacious, and collaborative problem-solvers who thrive on moving fast and building for the long term, even when the playbook hasn't been written yet.
About the Role
Based in one of our APAC hubs (Hong Kong or Tokyo), you will lead the most ambitious frontier of Uber’s mobility strategy. You will be responsible for architecting and overseeing the strategy for scaled AV fleet deployment across a multi-country footprint (Hong Kong and Tokyo to begin with, and hopefully expanding to Australia in the near future as well). This role requires a "Forest and the Trees" leader: someone who can define a multi-year regional vision while remaining deeply connected to the operational details that drive performance. You will not only lead your team but also serve as a bridge to Uber’s core business, ensuring our autonomous future integrates seamlessly with our existing human-driven fleet operations.
What You’ll Do
- Organizational Leadership: Recruit, mentor, and lead a distributed team of Operations Managers across APAC, fostering a culture of high accountability and operational excellence.
- Strategic Expansion: Lead the roadmap for scaling fleet sizes and launching new markets across APAC.
- Infrastructure & Real Estate: Act as the primary decision-maker for critical infrastructure, including the selection, leasing, and strategic design of vehicle depots and "pitstop" maintenance hubs.
- Core Business Integration: Work closely with core Uber leadership to ensure the autonomous fleet scales in harmony with the human-driven fleet, maintaining a balanced and efficient marketplace.
- Executive Stakeholder Management: Navigate high-stakes interactions with C-suite executives at AV Fleet & Tech partners and infrastructure investors.
- Performance Accountability: Own the KPIs for the APAC AV Fleet Operations, using data-driven insights to manage the complex trade-offs between aggressive growth and operational efficiency.
Basic Qualifications
- 15+ years of experience in Operations, General Management, or Scaled Program Management, with at least 5+ years of experience managing people.
- Executive Communication: Proven ability to synthesize complex operational data into strategic narratives for board-level or C-suite audiences.
- Financial & Infrastructure Acumen: Direct experience in managing capital-intensive projects, including asset financing and industrial real estate/leasing decisions.
- Strategic Multitasking: Demonstrated "Forest and the Trees" capability—the ability to pivot from high-level strategy to granular technical troubleshooting.
- Regional Management: Experience leading operations across diverse regulatory and cultural landscapes.
- Ability to travel (~30-40%) to provide onsite leadership and manage high-value external partnerships.
Preferred Qualifications
- Logistics Experience: Experience in industries where digital platforms interact with heavy physical assets (e.g., logistics, aviation, or shared mobility). Experience with walking around warehouses/depots/factories and determining opportunities for efficiencies is preferred.
- Growth & Launch Expertise: A track record of taking nascent products or services and scaling them into mature, multi-market operations.
- Multilingual: Proficiency in English is required; fluency in Chinese or Japanese is a significant advantage.
