What the Candidate Will Do

Production Engineering engineers blend capabilities from Backend, Systems, and Reliability Engineering. You’ll work with internal stakeholders to deeply understand their services, architect solutions to reliability challenges, and build tooling and services to enhance reliability across Uber. Your work will directly impact millions of users worldwide.

You should be a strategic thinker who can identify efficiencies and develop solutions to improve production platforms and processes. Strong interpersonal skills, effective communication, and the ability to collaborate with diverse stakeholders are essential.

Typical Tasks

  • Partner with internal teams to develop reliable applications and identify patterns and opportunities in service behavior.

  • Debug large-scale reliability issues across multiple services and domains to improve system availability.

  • Plan new reliability services/features, write and review code, and create technical documentation.

  • Advocate for Production Engineering best practices and reliability across Uber Engineering.

Basic Qualifications

  • 4+ years of experience coding in Go, Java, C++, or Python.

  • 4+ years of experience building, maintaining, and debugging production services/platforms.

  • 2+ years of experience implementing complex software architectures with multiple dependencies.

  • Experience analyzing, monitoring, and troubleshooting large-scale, high-traffic distributed systems.

  • Effective communication with technical teams and leadership to gather requirements and explain technical designs.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including technical documentation.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, a related field, or equivalent practical experience.

  • Proven track record of delivering high-quality product features on time and at scale.

  • Experience guiding engineers during production incidents and contributing to postmortems.

  • Flexibility to collaborate with teams across different time zones.
